Drake University is looking for a senior-level administrator in its athletics department to oversee the internal operations of the department including budget management, financial management, equipment operations, and athletic facilities. This includes managing the athletics department annual budget, forming and implementing financial planning, participating as needed in the financial audit of the University as related to athletics and overseeing audit procedures performed annually as required by the NCAA. This position will be supported by an assistant director of business operations, and has oversight of a three-person facilities staff and three-person equipment staff. The selected individual will directly report to the Director of Athletics, will serve on the athletics department senior staff, and could have sport administrator responsibilities.
Communication: This position develops and communicates budget guidelines to athletics department staff. The ability to effectively communicate to a variety of individuals, including coaches, athletics department staff members, and campus colleagues is essential to this position.
Management: The chosen candidate will provide leadership for the internal operations of the athletics department, including business affairs, equipment operations, and athletics facilities, including, but not limited to, the development and implementation of short- and long-term plans, conducting personnel searches, and facilitating weekly operational meetings.
Capital Projects: This position provides oversight for capital projects. Drake Athletics is currently in the midst of planning for a new on-campus stadium and renovation to its basketball arena. Both projects are expected to begin construction in 2022.
Budget Development and Management: Develop an annual operating budget in consultation with the Director of Athletics, University Chief Financial Officer, and University Budget Director. This position will manage all aspects of the athletics department budget and oversee the day-to-day operations of the athletics business office. The successful candidate will be able to identify opportunities for expense reductions and revenue enhancements by analyzing organization operations and identifying new initiatives.
Reporting: This position supervises the maintenance of financial accounts, coordinates financial reporting for the NCAA annual report, prepares and submits a report for an annual University internal audit, and prepares, finalizes and submits the EADA report.
Contracts: Management and oversight of vendor relationships and contracts including, but not limited to, contract negotiation with vendors and creating game agreements for athletic programs.
Leadership: Serves as a member of the athletics department senior staff and fulfill various administrative responsibilities that will advance the overall well-being of the athletics department. This will include weekly administrative meetings and may include sport supervision. Specific duties will be assigned respective of the incumbent's sill set and needs of the department.
Strategy: This position works closely with the Director of Athletics to develop and implement strategies for the success of athletics as a whole, as well as each athletic program.
Other duties as assigned. All of the duties described above require an understanding of and compliance with the rules of the NCAA, the Missouri Valley Conference, Metro Atlantic Conference (Rowing only), and/or the Pioneer Football League (football only) and Drake University.
