Position Overview The Operations Director serves a key leadership role within the new UMIID to guide the formation and development of the new institute, which is designed to draw on significant basic and clinical research strengths within the University’s bio and health sciences. The Operations Director will support the UMIID Executive Committee, Internal and External Advisory Boards, Business/Industry Advisory Board, and future Executive Director to develop, implement, and grow UMIID. The Operations Director will oversee and implement UMIID initiatives and projects and support the Director to cultivate new research opportunities for UMN faculty. The Operations Director will report the UMIID Director.
Duties and responsibilities include:
Administrative Leadership (45%)
Engage and collaborate with leaders and faculty UMN-wide when necessary to promote the creation of UMIID in its initial formation and ongoing development
Develop and implement a strategic, ongoing management plan to advance current and future UMIID priorities.
Develop internal and external communications strategies, priorities, and messages
Compile and review institutional strengths and weaknesses to develop plans for possible changes or investments to enhance the institute’s success.
Work with Associate Deans in research to determine need for space to accomplish institute goals
Support the UMIID Executive Committee, Internal and External Advisory Boards, Business/Industry Advisory Board, and Executive Director, manage deadlines, and assist with preparation of materials for meetings
Facilitate the hiring of staff for UMIID and provide search committee support for all faculty hires
Create a positive, team-oriented working environment
Provides direct supervision to administrative staff
Project Management (45%)
Develop, implement, and maintain procedures, processes, and tools from concept
Develop and implement project management tools needed to support UMIID’s successful launch, to include but not limited to oversight of meeting agendas and schedules, opportunities for engagement with subject experts, and industry colleagues.
Lead projects and initiatives advancing the mission and/or operations of UMIID through project management support of UMIID’s strategic initiatives including researching, planning, and execution. The projects will require coordinating with multiple stakeholders and partners.
Identify new opportunities for using technology to convene and engage, while assisting as a subject matter expert, beta tester, or advisor.
Participate in and act as convenor when needed for gathering and engaging faculty and staff in developing and building the successfully launched and managed UMIID.
General Administrative Management (10%)
Manage all aspects of UMIID’s day-to-day administration and operations
Advise and assist the UMIID Director on fiscal issues related to UMIID, including working in collaboration with the UMIID Director to develop the annual budget, forecast revenues expenditures, and ensure ongoing financial support
Develop an annual UMIID report to the Vice Dean for Research to report on UMIID’s return on investment
Bachelor’s degree with at least 8 years of relevant professional experience, including work with senior level leaders in a non-profit or higher education environment
Demonstrated ability to lead, manage, and implement complex projects and strategic initiatives from concept
Mature judgment and demonstrated ability to work independently, exercise discretion, and manage multiple projects and priorities at once
Excellent interpersonal, critical thinking, and communication skills
Self-motivated and strategic thinker
Advanced degree in a field related to project management or administration
Experience in health sciences field
Experience working with University research infrastructure, services, and resources
Understanding of the University of MN organizational structure, policies, and procedures
Demonstrated experience in and an ongoing commitment to working effectively with and across diverse communities
