Description of Work:
The Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts is actively seeking an Assistant Dean of Business and Financial Affairs with demonstrated experience leading business and financial operations in a complex organization. The Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts includes four academic units and several self-sustaining affiliate units including the School of Art, Art History and Design; the Glenn Korff School of Music (including the Dance program); the Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film; and the Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts, along with the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center. The college has approximately 160 faculty and staff and more than 850 students. The College is welcoming a new Dean in July 2022, whose priority is developing sound and sustainable fiscal strategies to help the college's programs increase student impact, external partnerships, and national prominence. The Assistant Dean will be a key part of a collaborative leadership team that will guide the college to enact these priorities. The ideal candidate will be a business strategist interested in being a part of a vision-focused leadership team at an exciting moment for the college.
Position Overview
This is a twelve-month appointment. This position is a senior leadership role that reports directly to the Dean of the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts. The Assistant Dean provides support for all matters regarding business and financial operations of the college and the college's units, serving as the chief business and financial officer of the college. Responsibilities include maintenance of business operations and processes; preparation of budgets, reports, and business cases; conducting impact and cost/benefit analyses; and identifying funding strategies. Additional responsibilities include the management of the college's human resource activity as it pertains to the appointment of faculty and staff. The Assistant Dean serves as the supervisor for all staff in the Dean's office including the office management, communications and external relations, recruitment, advising and information technology areas, and collaborates with the Dean's Office leadership team on assignments and evaluation of work. In this way, the Assistant Dean oversees operations, including the management of support and administrative staff, creation and adherence to policies and procedures, prioritization of activities, scheduling, streamlining workflow, communications and processes. This position is involved in strategic, administrative, operational and confidential matters with responsibility to create a unified understanding of and progress towards goals and priorities established by the Dean of the College. The Assistant Dean will ensure responsiveness of staff, the effective and efficient use of resources, and provide oversight of projects to meet milestones according to identified objectives. The Assistant Dean provides oversight of the college's facilities, an annual budget of approximately $17 million, and an endowment of over $90 million. Finally, the Assistant Dean will be expected to implement best business practices across the College and monitor their effectiveness.
The Assistant Dean is supported by a full-time Business Manager and the
Big Red Business Center (
BRBC). The
BRBC also supports other units on campus and the Assistant Dean is part of the
BRBC Governance Board. Together, the Assistant Dean, Business Manager, and
BRBC serve the entire college and maintain high levels of customer service and quality to the administration, faculty, staff, and students of the college. In addition, the Assistant Dean is responsive to the needs of central university offices and compliance related to all business and financial affairs. The Assistant Dean is a member of the university's College Academic Business Officers group.

Minimum Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in business administration, finance, management, or related field.
- At least six (6) years of significant managerial experience in a professional business environment.
- Experience with financial and accounting systems and business intelligence/reporting tools.
- Experience supervising staff and ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders and employees at all levels of the organization.
- Must demonstrate strong organizational, written and oral communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to solve complex problems and analyze and present data visually for appropriate audiences.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusiveness.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in accounting, finance, business administration, public administration, or related field.
- More than eight (8) years of managerial experience in a professional business environment.
- University of Nebraska-Lincoln or other higher education institutional experience.
- Experience with an incentive based budget model and experience in changing fiscal strategies in response to innovation, change, and growth.
