Position Summary
Under close supervision, is responsible for supporting data center operations which cover managing site facilities and maintenance, security and surveillance systems, system installations/configurations, IT data network systems, internal databases, and the overall customer experience. Primary activities include ensuring the uptime, performance, and resource availability of the computers and other IT systems to minimize breakdowns and maximize continuing operations with minimal disruption. Responsible for matching the organization's resources with the demand placed on them. Support involves monitoring network performance, identifying/resolving network and system problems, upgrading IT data center equipment, and ensuring the quality, accuracy, and security of asset database. Specialist performs a wide variety of IT responsibilities and must adhere to the infrastructure standards of the University.
Job Description
Standard computer department working environment with standing, walking, and lifting less than 50 pounds required; a moderate amount of work performed at customer site. Position will serve in the on-call rotation.Â
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Assists with the daily data center operations.
- Installs, configures, and troubleshoots server and computer hardware, software, systems, and other resources within the data center.
- Maintains data integrity, and file system security for the computer/data center environment.
- Monitors, tracks, and records system performance and utilization metrics.
- Assists logging and auditing of facility access control systems.
- Assists Facilities personnel with performing data center quality assurance inspections; maintains detailed records of all facility maintenance, repair, and site monitoring; coordinates and schedules all data center preventative maintenance and emergency repairs with vendors and contractors.
- Assists with planning and implementation of systems and services in the data center. Supports in the performance and coordination of data center moves, adds, and changes.Â
- Assist with assessments of the power, cooling, space, and weight sizing requirements for new projects. Â
- Assists in inventory tagging of data center equipment.Â
- Maintains asset database.
- Supports production and disaster recovery operations environment, and makes enterprise back-up system recommendations.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate degree plus one to two years of relevant experience.
- Customer Service: Must possess a basic knowledge of computer and network system components and how they interface, an aptitude for patience, professionalism, tactfulness, and empathy, must possess the ability to clearly communicate with team members and vendors through written and spoken word.
- Planning and Organization: Ability to work independently on routine situations and the ability to recognize deviations from routine scenarios to escalate more difficult/complex matters to senior specialists or management.
- Technical Knowledge: Understands the integration of operating systems and platforms; understands the individual components and of their relationship in data network design; proficient in the operation and relationship of network hardware and software; ability to understand functional system integration issues; understands technology components (not just based on script) to diagnose routine problems; ability to spot trends in reoccurring problems and assist in developing solutions.
- Technical Solution Development: Ability to implement solutions of medium complexity and follow standard operating procedures.
- Technical Support: Ability to independently resolve routine problems within areas of responsibilities; ability to troubleshoot problems by probing users for information relevant to solving problem; ability to perform limited diagnostics on assigned software and hardware.
Required Qualifications
Associate degree in computer science or related field and one year of relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Salary Range
$22.25 - $34.45 / Hourly
The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
