The Chemistry and Chemical Biology Department is one of the oldest Chemistry departments in the nation with a proud history of discovery, innovation and scholarship. Education is a central focus for the Department that teaches thousands of undergraduate and advanced students each year. Under the direction of the Lab Services Manager, coordinate and provide support services for undergraduate general, analytical, and organic chemistry laboratory courses and special programs; and for the chemical waste collection program. There are 6 lab courses per semester (plus 4 lab courses in the summer). Service is provided to 25 labs on 5 floors, enrolling up to 2500 students per semester. This position is responsible for supervising student employees in providing the appropriate reagents, supplies and equipment to the teaching labs; properly collecting, treating, packaging, and disposing of chemical waste from the teaching labs; assisting in maintenance programs for the teaching labs, stockrooms, chemical preparation and storage areas; assisting with inventory control and receiving of supplies. Primary focus for this position is the oversight of the organic teaching laboratory courses, of which there are two in the spring semester and one in each of the fall and summer semesters, for a total enrollment of up to 800 students per year.
Required Qualifications: Bachelor's degree; 2 to 4 years' relevant experience or equivalent combination. Significant experience with safe handling of chemicals required. Computer literacy for basic technical programs and applications needed to perform responsibilities (MS Office, Word, Excel, FileMaker, Power Point, Outlook). Requires experience with a broad range of chemistry experiments. Prior training in chemical hazards and an understanding of appropriate response to an accident or emergency are mandatory. Previous experience supervising staff and students. Attention to detail and organizational skills are critical. Effective problem solving and the ability to work well with others required. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced team-oriented environment, are necessary.
Degree Fields Preferred: Chemistry, Biochemistry and Physics are acceptable. Teaching experience of some kind is strongly preferred.
